127. BEEHIVE INK BOTTLE. 1.7ins tall, 3ins long. Good deep ish aqua glass, heavily embossed beehive detailing, sheared
lip - re-attached at the bottom. Here are the words from the upcoming new book: Bee Skep figural Teakettle Fountain Ink bottle Regd 1866 (class III, no.199959) by Joseph Teagle & Edwin Martin of the Eclipse Glass Works, Artillery Street, Bermondsey. The reservoir seems at first sight to be composed of staggered brickwork (the bottle has been called an ‘Igloo’),
but the registration specifically calls it a beehive. The alternating lines are imitating woven raffia, which
holds together the straw rings making up this kind of hive. Beehives have symbolism linked to industry
and order. There is a nipple at the apex, and the base has the diamond registration mark embossed.
Found in aqua, smoky pale blue and light green (at least two), all extremely rare: no more than 10 recorded, several damaged. Full listing in the upcoming Guy Burch Inks tome. An affordable rarity given the damage, displays well. 7/10. NR. £150- 200+
