P. 27
106. WALTER FORBES & CO/ EDINBURGH & NEWCASTLE COBALT BLUE CYLINDER. 8.6ins tall, deep cobalt blue - a really difficult colour to capture accurately, almost veering towards hint of purple? Heavy blob lip. Embossed vertically ‘WALTER FORBES & Co’ & ‘EDINBURGH/ & NEWCASTLE’ with a large pictorial t.m between depicting a beaver carrying a stick, and the words ‘TRADE’ ‘MARK’ around. The bottle was reportedly dug from the famous ‘Green Bing’ site on the outskirts of Edinburgh & has been quite heavily polished. Still the only recorded example & thus another significant blue mineral water bottle offering. (8?/10) NR £1,200-1,500+
Selected background from John Yules ‘Nothing But The Blues’ book, pages 79 to 81:
The Edinburgh chemist and aerated mineral water manufacturer Walter Forbes opened a mineral water factory in Newcastle
upon Tyne c. 1894.
• 1894-97, 100 Percy Street.
Walter Forbes business was based in Edinburgh at Beaverhall Bank - the obvious source for the firms pictorial trade mark. The Newcastle branch
lasted only a few years.
