I opted for an A4 size instead of the usual A5 we’d gone to for
our four regular Bottle & Pot Lid sales. Apologies to all who’ve catalogues lined in BBR binders - and this one doesn’t fit. But I felt it warranted some difference to help lift it above the norm’, make
it genuinely something special to stand out on the occasion of the 30th UK SummerNational. I put my heart and soul into it, revelled in making it stand out from the crowd - different to all before!
entire presentation a little with a moving image to catch other staff members and capture the ambiance of the room set up - Katie does a cracking good job on this count, we call it fettling.
Given difficulties to view the auction lots BBR has added an innovative concept - WhatsApp or Face Time lot previewing - we call you and you can peruse all facets of a particulat lot.
Reception of the catalogue as it hit doorsteps around the country was unanimous - “wow”, “... congrats’ on a superb/ tremendous catalogue just received, the best one yet?” DR, “... how good does it look, surely the best printed bottle related catalogue yet?” RH, “... like the Fullers ovate in the BBR auction catalogue, fantastic pictures don’t need to bid for anything the catalogue is that
good!” SM, “... has to be one of the best ever spreads and just an absolutely stunning catalogue presentation, better than anything from the likes of the major auction houses, well done AB!” JH. “... this catalogue has lifted our hobby up a notch. All kind comments appreciated.

It was obvious we would have to operate our July 5th afternoon Auction in complete close down, behind locked doors, no public allowed just BBR staff. I’ve watched a few online sales via easylive, and other operators, and they come over as a little bit lifeless. BBR used to have a camera in the salesroom streaming into the cafe/ reception area so people could stand outside the room,
have a drink, some food and a natter, but watch and listen to so they didn’t miss out on lots they were
waiting to come up later. Sometimes the camera view that customers see online is not the best, half heads, top of heads and a few times inappropriate
backgrounds - as per the Wessex Auction Rooms spotted the other week - oops, unless it was intentional?
We ditched the salesroom camera
a while back mainly because of the annoying time delay. However, for this
very special July 5th sale we felt it would be a good idea, and appropriate, to be able to see not just maybe

This catalogue simply could not been done without ‘a little help from friends’ - well, actually a lot. Top of the pops goes to Guy Burch for his brilliant reaserch behind many lots in this catalogue. We also asked Bob Houghton to assist regarding pot lids... and several collectors for other ‘tit bits’ - John Ault, Tony Bebbington, Stuart Leiberman, Peter Douglas, sorry if we’ve missed you off.

represents a competitor to Hamilton and is not the same patent. A patent (no 4357) of April 1819 was
granted to Henry Peter Fuller was for “procuring or preparing sulphate of soda, soda, sub-carbonate of soda,
and muriatic acid”. Fuller’s notices mention “patent glass machines” and both glass and stone bottles. A similar
preparation was advertised as ‘patent’ by the Irish surgeon James Murray but vigorously doubted by correspondents to Newspapers including Hamilton. One other Fuller example is recorded, formally in Dennis Northmore’s Collection (sold by BBR July 2002).

LLANELLY TOOTH PASTE POT LID. 2.4ins square. Described in ‘Historical Guide to Advertising Pot Lids’ by Houghton, Layden
& Taylor (p627) this exact same pot lid is illustrated and described as bearing a “stunning set of teeth pictorial.”
Taking all this into account the present bottle probably dates to about 1878. We
are not aware of another extant example of this unique survivor? Some body wear. though no real damage. (8/10) NR £1,500-2,000+
In October 1877 Hiram Codd was issued with a new patent (October 22nd, pat
no 3903) placing retaining lugs within the body of the bottle rather than in a neck chamber illustrating the patent with a diagram of a cylindrical bottle - no examples have been found of that shape. The lugs were symmetrical and converging to channel the stopper as it rolled to the neck. This bottle has shorter ridges but the function is clearly the same. wThe embossing tells us it was Codd’s patent rather than one lodged jointly with Dan Ryland but was made at the Hope glassworks, Barnsley, under their partnership with him that began in 1876. The numbers following the word ‘patent’,
in this case ‘4’, are believed represent the licence granted to the maker of the bottle
- Ryland. The specific ‘Rylands & Codd’ embossing used dates between 1877-81. David Jones speculated this bottle was part of an experimental batch (perhaps
testing the 1877 patent idea) but it is highly likely it was made to be marketed.
There is ample evidence surviving bottles, even very rare ones, would be produced
in large quantities, at least in the hundreds, if not more. The 1877 patent
probably just proved less efficient, did not sell well and was rapidly
discontinued. The fact no drinks company name is present also
suggests a bottle not having found a retailer prepared to commission
There are a couple of underside base flakes which don’t spoil the display factor of this exceptional rarity. The rust, as it was dug, has been left on the lid - to clean or not to clean? An especially significant, once in a lifetime
opportunity, to acquire a very special UK pot lid ‘gem!’ (8/10) NR £1,200-1500+
NB: This was dug by Mike Bowen at the famous Aberystwyth tip
more under licence?
in 1999. He told BBR “we were
living in Bicester at the time and a collector friend got in touch saying he had permission to dig the site Saturday and Sunday afternoons. They were going to build a new school on a Football/ Rugby pitch
known to be located on top of an old tip.
I travelled to Llanelli on 3 consecutive weekends staying
at my Mother’s before travelling a further 70 miles early to
Aberystwyth. The first Sunday we had fine rain all day, there were bottles everywhere as the turf had already been removed. Second weekend made the same trip but it didn’t rain, and again plenty of goodies.
On the final weekend I hit “paydirt” - after about 2 hours I hit water
some 3 feet down and called over to another digger who said it
was dry where he was. Very shortly after that I dug a square base
and gingerly forked the ground. I could see the lid face down and
when I turned it over I think everyone on the site must have heard
me call out!”

This bottle has been thoroughly researched by the late John Yule in his book ‘Nothing but the Blues, Blue Glass Mineral Water
Bottles from North East England’ (pages 24-26, colour plate p59). He rated it “among the most desirable bottles in blue glass from the North East”.
The Mineral water Trade Review & Guardian of July 1885 reported John Arkle (1822-85), a coal agent, started the mineral water company, shortly before his death, for his son Thomas (1853-1890). Thomas’s name appears in 1884 directories at George & Dragon Yard in Morpeth. In 1886 Margaret Arkle (John’s wife or their daughter, also called Margaret then aged 31) is given as the manufacturer but by 1890 she had returned to the coal agency supplying manure and lime. The very
brief time span of the company of about six years (c. 1884-90) explains why
any Arkle bottle is rare. John Yule reported aqua bottles with both Thomas and
Margaret Arkle’s names embossed and for Bell & Black (Margaret’s manager
was William Bell) at the yard which apparently had a pure water spring on the
premises. Yule accounted for four 6oz sizes and one 10oz sizes known (this ex
Malkey collection).
BBR sold an example of the 6oz, with weak embossing, in 2014, July, lot 4.

Bears grease was listed in the 1786 purchase tax on cosmetics. Its use
by ‘savages’ was remarked upon by
the perfumer Alexander Ross in his ‘Treatise on Bears Grease’ (1795) where he credits “Mr Townsend an Apothecary who resided near a century since in the Haymarket” with introducing prepared bears grease. The earliest bears grease pots are Delftware ointments with a bear pictured and ‘Prepar’d by Townsend
and sold only / by C King Chymist Hay Market’. Ross’s ‘Hair Warehouse’ was at 119 Bishopsgate at that time and he had succeeded Willian Vickery before that. A Vickery delftware pot with a bear pictured has ‘Bishopsgate & Tavistock St’ (see

Ross poured scorn on the claims for hair restorers and sold his grease as a conditioner. Most 19th Century sellers promoted it for ‘beautifying and strengthening’ the hair. Many lids reference Russian bear’s grease and a Ballad of 1880 tells us where most were found:
Says Jack, “see (my eyes!) The cause of your surprise; You wonder why your sailor should so hairy be,
But my hair did thus increase
With the using of bear’s-grease
