sometimes seen on tins and although known to have made ketchup and salad cream and famously peas, tins with scenes from ‘Who Killed Cock Robin’ do show a tiny packet of mustard and these originally had a wraparound label that pointed to mustard and mushroom ketchup made at Boston. succeeded him at Fleet Road, Holbeach before moving to Boston about 1890 where they ran the
Carlton Works. Chromolithography printed mustard tinswere issued by many companies and several such as
the Art Nouveau tin of 1899 featuring the ‘Seasons’ by Mucha are very rare as is Keen’s mustard tins that include
a ‘Big Game’ motif. Keen’s issued a tin for Queen Victoria’s Jubilee in 1887. Rather like tea canisters, the tins were
infact intended for reuse this way and Colman’s barrel tins actually suggested this.
As Keen’s noted on labels (registered in 1877) in ‘The Taming of the Shrew’
Shakespeare includes the line “What say you to a piece of beef and mustard?” It’s been hot stuff ever since.
Above: Only ever seen one of these barrel shaped Colmans tins, impressed on the inside ‘... Purveyors of Mustard/ To The King.’
