This example impressed HARRISON / 422 STRAND’ to rear (other variants include ‘MONASTIC INK / HARRISON / 422 STRAND’ to lower rear edge, with diamond registry mark to base, on his belly or, much more rarely, ‘MONASTIC INK / ACKERMANN & Co / 96 STRAND’ with the diamond mark impressed on the habit at the front base edge). Rarely offered on the open market. Inmanufacture flaws, no damages. NR (9.5/10) £300-400+ AB
Street listings do not turn up an ink maker with the right surname based on
the Strand. A ‘curiosity dealer’ called John is listed in Maiden Lane and, in 1843 and at the Lowther Arcade, is Daniel a jeweller. No Fredrick is shown for the right profession: only a cloth printer listed in Bow Church Yard a decade before the registration. Ink makers Harrison & Co were based at Stratford in Essex. Perhaps the best bet comes from examining the geography of the area
- number 422 was on the corner of Bedford Street where, in 1843, the Covent Garden stationers Harrison & Co had their shop (Henry Harrison was at 41). Perhaps wholesaling the inkwell themselves, they made versions
for Ackermann’s, only a short walk east on the south side
of the Strand by the entrance to Beaufort buildings.
Rudolph Ackermann senior (1764-1834) was a coach
designer and inventor moving to London from
Saxony in 1783. Ackerman’s had two premises on
the Strand: opening the shop at number 96 in
1795 they took on number 101 ‘The Repository
of Arts’ in 1797. In 1827, after disastrous stock
market dealings they moved back to number 96
as Ackerman & Co’s Repository of Arts in a
partnership including Rudolph’s sons. They
were colourmen and fancy stationers
besides being booksellers and
publishers.
