Water supplies in Victorian towns and cities were notoriously poor. Industrial and household waste was very often tipped into rivers without any kind of purification process, so the water people drank was heavily polluted. A number
of particularly severe cholera epidemics in the 1850’s led to a greater understanding of water- borne diseases. This in turn sparked a concerted effort from industry and municipal government tointroduce water filtration. A number of companies introduced free standing household filters to stand on the sideboard in the living room providing a highly varied source for todays collectors.
