260. NUNNELEYS BURTON ALE BEER COASTER. 5.9ins diam. Undoubtedly the finest ever coaster offering by BBR
- an outstanding and very colourful design reportedly one of only 2 examples recorded. Within the
outer lettering, set on a black ground, are 4 scenes illustrating crop gathering, making to enjoying the actual brew! Rear Sir Joseph Causton transfer
& impressed mark. Some manufacturing flaws/ slight crudity, but in truth Exc/
A1 condition. A significant Breweriana offering. 9.8/10. NR.
J Nunneley & Co, Bridge Street Brewery,
22 Bridge Street, Burton-upon-Trent, Staffordshire was founded around 1720, although the exact founding date is uncertain. Joseph Nunneley was certainly brewing on this site from the 1840’s, and registered as above in 1888, although Kevan believes the same family were also brewing in Market Harborough.
Nunneley were bought in 1895 with 7 public
houses by the Burton Brewery Co. Ltd and
ceased brewing. In 1915 they came into the ownership of Worthington & Co. Ltd.
The Brewery buildings themselves were
demolished during the 1920’s, but the
frontage remains on Bridge Street in
Burton with a blue plaque recording: Built
ca.1760 by Samuel Sketchley a brewer,
and later occupied by Joseph Nunneley’s
Brewery.
