   ROW’S EMBROCATION
Originally marketed by J Row most mid-19th century adverts are in the name of Richard W Row at Torrington in Devon. It was a veterinary cure for sprains, cuts and wounds in livestock but latter also sold for human use in gout and rheumatism stating: “‘Row’s Embrocation has no longer a place alone in the Stable, but thousands of families now keep it as
an invaluable Embrocation in cases of accident”. Established in 1814 according to the company, there are salt glazed bottles c1830-50with ROWS EMBROCATION and either ‘TORRINGTON’ (earliest used
until c1870) or ‘MARKET PLACE / NEWTON ABBOT’. Adverts of the 1870s state “prepared by S.O. Row” BinL‘jOarBs’BunYtilB1L8O84B. A. Bt tlhoabtbtiyme it is prepared by “Row & Bibbings” at Newton Abbot who specifically state
it is also for human use and that they are now using glass bottles. The firm were declared bankrupt three times in the 19th century but survived. As Edward Row & Co the company, not surprisingly given their livestock reputation, were the longest tenants of the Union Bond Store in Sydney from 1875-1921. The current bottle, with hefty serif embossing and a chunky base is
certainly 19th century.
