Prices Realised - Winter National - Sunday 16th Feb.
Another “belter” - quackers busy!by room bidders for £840 each - the latter
returning to Birmingham.
The minerals here were split across three
separate parts of the sale. First a page of early aqua codds (best
performer a South Yorkshire ex David
Walker Barker Codds Patent 4 @
£204), later a pictorial amber 6oz
South Wales Cardiff codd totalled
£780, but top rattlers fell on the last
page - 10oz amber Wickham Ware
Sykes McVay £960, 6oz Newbury
green £1,080... the last offering
scoring top slot - 10oz amber lip
Scottish codd £1560 - bit of a rare
bargain at BBR?
A page of slab sealed stouts/
porters featured the greatly admired
Spalding t.t. making £1,200 - spot on
the estimate, but the lozenge shaped
Retford made ten times the estimate
= £660. Both these were chased in
the room.
A very good varied inks offering
saw a green tinged cottage ink
for £1,140 beating the mid blue
example @ £1,020, although the
much darker blue unembossed
cottage (never seen another?) was
much chased for £660.
A black glass range rounded
everything off with the ex David Walker
Barker shaft & globe achieving its top
catalogue estimate at £2,160.
For the hard working BBR team it was, as
always, a “quackers” & hectic week-end
(the above duck pipe making £440 by the
way), but the camaraderie & friendliness
shone through, making it all worthwhile...
until the next time.
A typical BBR Sunday spread put together by AB, something
across most every collecting field, offering collectors a chance
to purchase fresh to market goodies for their
display shelves.
The opening, so called ‘practise page’, had 8
varied items, top spot falling to the very much
admired, small, salt glaze, highly detailed, house
shaped, money box. At just over £850 it could
well be a record achieved for such?
Kitchenalia & pot lids preceded the first salt
glaze pages - top slot here, at just under
£1,000, scored with the giant Doulton & Watts
Reform flask, followed by a pub named Early
Grey reform at £540, that just pipped by a later Leslie
Harradine John Burns flask at £560.
Two pages of, mainly, Roy Sherwins collection (still plenty
to trickle through) saw a very rare 24oz Admiralty chased
by no less than 23 online bidders to
£420, & later a green Tippers £1080.
And so the first 2 pages, in this sale,
of the Dudley Davidson collection.
A small toe in the water start, a little
bit of everything. The ‘star’ here was
always going to be the very important (although
not everyone’s “cup of tea”) 1781 dated
Robert Brettingham De Carle hand thrown jug.
A conservative estimate of £800 to £1,200,
was ignored by all the 30 plus chasers, two
overseas collectors (Australia & America) finally
battling it out online - the Oz person
securing it for £3,000 total. The
later batch of DD items saw the delightful
lions duo growling, again 30 plus online
bidders, to £1,440, almost five times the
top estimate. The pub named Old Tom style
reform, lot 521, & the wonderful Birmingham
pub named hip flask, were both secured
£440
