as CGSA / Bayer Superintendent of the Year in 2016 is obviously a great honour.” Doug continued, “The two previous Superintendents at Riverside Country Club, Sid Puddicombe and my father Don Campbell are both John B. Steel award winners and hopefully I have helped continue their legacies that they started at Riverside.”
Having the successful career that Doug has, doesn’t happen without some sound advice that he keeps close to him and made him who he is today. “I was always brought up to try to treat people equally and fairly, and not to dwell on things that are out of your control.” He continued, “One piece of advice I
would give to new-comers to the industry, is to keep listening and learning to grow in this industry and not be afraid to give back by attending conferences, seminars and even serving on a regional or national board.” We are very fortunate to be in such a great profession where it feels like family and everyone is there to help out in any way.
Since the beginning, Riverside has always had a special place in Doug’s heart with a real family feeling. “I worked for my father for many years and continue to work with my brother Glen who’s also in the golf industry but on the building side of things and has done all our renovation work since 1980.” Campbell continued,
“My daughter Lily did her first tour of the course when she was 2 weeks old and worked on the course as well when she was 14 for a few years. I also met my wife Kim here too, who worked part time for me cutting greens for 14 years, lastly not to mention both her daughter Robyn and son Nathan worked on the Turf Crew as well.”
Congratulations to Doug on an exceptional career! GM
