where I was. What I didn’t realize at the time was that this was the start to a 20+ year friendship. Over that time we have had many calls, texts, and road trips and Ken has been a great mentor sharing his knowledge and experience of the industry with me. My youngest daughter Ashley refers to our conversations as “turf talk”. Over the years, whether it be turf talk or just to see how each other is doing, knowing that support is just a call away definitely helps in one’s success.”
As for advice he received, Pierre says two things come to mind, “Pay attention to the details and always be as prepared as you can by having a plan.” About advice he would tell his younger self, Pierre states, “Enjoy the successes and good times. There will be days when things do not go according to your plan. Do not dwell on what was, figure it out and move on. My wife Kerry tells me all the time, “only worry about what you can control; if you cannot control it do not worry about it”.
For someone who is thinking about entering the industry or who is newly involved in the industry, Pierre advises, “Our industry is a pretty special place. In reality, each facility is competing and looking for a way to get a step up on the course down the road for the same clients/golfers, but in the same breath we will do whatever it takes to help colleagues in their time of need.”
As newly elected President, Pierre has many goals for the association. “Even through the challenges the pandemic has presented the last two years, the association has remained strong. That in itself is a great example of the support within our industry. The plan for the current year, and years to come, is to continue to grow the membership and be there to promote and support the golf course management profession. There is no question that there is strength in numbers...continuing to grow is essential.”
One of the final questions asked of Pierre was what makes a good team and what his management style is and his response is valuable for all, “Everyone striving for the same goals. Good teams do not happen by accident, it takes time and effort to create a culture that people want to be a part of. Creating and maintaining a culture where everyone can contribute will lead to success. I’m a big believer in “we” not “I”. It is extremely difficult, if not impossible, to be successful without supporting each other. I have been fortunate to have had the opportunity to create and be part of some great teams over the years. Surrounding yourself with good people is a great recipe for success and at the end of the day have fun while doing it.”
When Pierre is not at work, he enjoys spending time with his wife Kerry and their two daughters Raelyn and Ashley and a golden retriever, Copper. He says, “During the summer away from the golf course we enjoy our time at the lake, whether it be on the water doing water sports or just sitting around the campfire in the evenings. In the winter, we can usually be found in a hockey rink somewhere. Both girls play hockey, I was fortunate enough to help coach our oldest, Raelyn, for 5 years. Ashley plays goal so I can usually be found at her games off in the corner by myself somewhere. With their support, I am able to enjoy a career I truly have a passion for...taking care of a golf course!” GM
