• One experimental development
using AI is lightning probability
using GLM satellite data. The model
“learns” when the cloud tops reach
a certain temperature to provide
the risk for lightning over the next
60 minutes.
• Downscaling, or a forecast that is
tuned to a precise location, is
becoming more commonplace.
Storms can move quickly and be
different a few holes apart. With
downscaling a meteorologist can
see both the “big picture” and what
is occurring at a hyperlocal level.
Beyond safety, consider how this
can impact operational costs. Torrey
Pines in California recently installed a
modern irrigation system with more
than 2,500 sprinkler heads that can
each be turned on or off individually,
weather insights to inform those
decisions make the best use of that
investment.
WEATHER RISKS INCREASE WITH
GOLF POPULARITY
Golf is experiencing a surge in popu-
larity, drawing in a new wave of
players from all walks of life.
According to the National Allied Golf
Association (NAGA) in 2023, 6 million
golfers played an estimated 74 million
rounds of golf. That is a noticeable
uptick from 57 million rounds in 2019.
In addition, it is not just seasoned
pros or retirees getting in on the
action. What is particularly interesting
is the influx of younger players. The
National Golf Federation reports that
nearly 24% of active golfers are under
35, with a significant portion new to
the game.
Experienced golfers know the
weather risks but with the uptick in
younger and first-time golfers,
weather-related safety education and
action from golf course operators
becomes more urgent.
Having a robust weather plan,
which includes knowing the weather
risks, action triggers and course of
action will help the diverse range of
players play smart and safely. It will
also help golf superintendents make
efficient, agile decisions around
weather-related events year-round
for course management and
operational efficiency.
