Inadequate planning in site selection may also impact the primary
plant. This shrub was planted next to a roadway that gets salted
in the winter. The salt has damaged the shrub during the snow
removal process.
This cedar hedge provides an excellent barrier with shade and
cooling effects at the same time is eye-catching.
Build a relationship with a reput-
able plant grower or nursery. Look
for nurseries that offer a wide
selection of healthy plants. Visit their
stockyards when time permits and
see what part of their inventory is
typically. Ask questions about trends
in landscape plant selections and
check out what is available on both
short notice and what can be grown
for you for installation 5 years or
more in the future.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT PLANTS
FOR YOUR GOLF COURSE
Know what you want from your
planting design. Is it to screen
unpleasant views such as a parking
lot? Perhaps you want to guide
pedestrian traffic near your
clubhouse or on the golf course.
Shade may be needed for your patio,
or you want to ensure that sunlight
gets to your green complex. Use
plants with unique characteristics as
a focal point in your landscape or
mass plants together to create a
background for your golf experience.
While many golf course
superintendents and their staff have
valuable insight on plant qualities, be
sure to speak to your landscape
designer for further guidance on
what will make for a vibrant planting
scheme for your golf environment.
