Canada’s
Anti-Spam
Law
(CASL)
What You Need To Know
Canada’s Anti-Spam Law (CASL) continues to create challenges and confusion for organizations of all sizes across Canada. Golf courses are no exception - if your business has any electronic presence at all, then chances are, you have had to deal with CASL (whether you know it or not!).
OVERVIEW OF CASL
CASL applies to “commercial electronic messages” (CEMs)
The term CEM has two important components.
First, the message has to be an “electronic message.” These are messages sent by email, text, sound, voice or image messaging, which are sent to an “electronic address.” So, that includes email accounts, instant messaging accounts and telephone numbers (in the case of a text message). CASL does not apply to general website updates, Facebook posts, and tweets.
