HOW TO RECOVER THE COSTS OF SECURITY
To help your bottom line, there are meaningful incentives for golf courses to install and maintain centrally monitored alarm systems.
For instance, Signature Golf offers a 15% credit on their insurance if the club has a monitored system in place. If there is no system then the premium is actually increased by 15% to try and account for the extra risk (due to the fact that most golf courses are often in remote locations and therefore the perfect targets for thieves). This is a 30% swing!
There is another major incentive for all golf clubs to add fencing and security cameras, etc. Insurance rates are based on past experience. When an insurance company provides a new or renewal quote to a facility, the rst thing they do is review their 5 year loss history.
If the club has had a theft or any type of loss then the insurance company must remove their claims free credits. They will also want to see what steps the course has taken to protect themselves against a similar future event. You must demonstrate that you have taken steps to protect yourself or they will not offer a quote.
All of these things add up to very signi cant annual savings. Jim Grant of Signature Golf suggests, “that the return on investment for a centrally monitored alarm system alone is 1 year. The same is true for facilities who have outdoor cart storage and install video monitoring. If they can avoid a loss the savings are immeasurable.”
BE PROACTIVE
Unfortunately, dealing with criminal activity is part of doing business. There is no cost effective way to completely protect your business, but with a common sense approach and minor investment you can certainly make your operation more secure.
If you are victimized, please reach out to your NGCOA Canada Regional Director who will pass on this information to your fellow colleagues. As well, if you experience theft from your facility, in addition to the local authorities, you should also consider reaching out to local consignment/trade-in sport stores (for example, Play It Again Sports) so they can keep an eye out for criminals attempting to trade in stolen goods.
