sons, and projections—you name it.
And that’s just green fees! Every
department now has KPIs that,
together, tell the full story of our
business. (KPIs, are something I
also learned about in that very first
conference session!).
Today, our decision-making is
deeply data-driven, supported by
NGCOA Canada’s Research Depart-
ment. Their Annual Pulse Report
provides a big-picture view of
industry trends, invaluable for
budget planning and operator
discussions. The Compensation and
Benefits Report is essential during
salary negotiations and staffing
reviews. Combined with our own
three-year trends, budget season
feels less like guesswork and more
like game-planning.
Once the season begins, we track
daily metrics — rounds, revenues,
even a simple weather rating – to
measure progress against budget
and prior years. When the NGCOA
Canada Monthly Rounds Played
Report and Weather Report arrive,
we align with our own data to
ensure accuracy. (Pro tip: rating
weather daily is a lifesaver when
reviewing historical sales to decide
on staffing, predict weekend
demand, or evaluate whether a May
tournament is worth more than a
regular play day.)
Of course, rounds and weather
can be a little subjective. That’s why
the Monthly Revenue Reports are
invaluable —a no-spin snapshot of
market performance, drawn directly
from course banking transactions
via Moneris. The few minutes it
takes to enter our data each month
is time well spent.
Having all of this data at our
fingertips has helped us create
loyalty programs to increase rounds,
implement dynamic pricing
resulting in a 20%+ increase in
average greenfee, and gave us
confidence in implementing tee
time deposits. These incremental
data-driven decisions have
produced a significant and lasting
impact on our bottom line.
And to think—it all began with
a single seed planted at an NGCOA
Canada conference many years ago.
