As cited earlier, enhanced
smart practice ranges remained
quite in vogue through 2023-24, as
the amenity most frequently cited
by facility owners to be in demand
by their customers. Trendy, newly
designed and more modern bar
and food and beverage venues
were also quite popular. In lockstep
with the cultivation of new golfers,
savvy owners viewed F&B as
another opportunity to bring in
incremental customers that could
but needn’t have to take advantage
of the core golf offerings. These
amenities are perceived to expand
the customer base and as a logical
response to a more broadly viewed
competitive set of leisure activities.
As facilities meet customers where they are, that has also brought
about greater embracement of yield management and dynamic pricing
implementation. Just as airlines, hotels and professional sports franchises
have done, today’s golf facility has great opportunities in recognizing
variations in demand and price elasticities to optimize revenue.
WHERE DO WE NET OUT IN 2025?
Broadly speaking, barring any unforeseen economic or geo-political
shocks, the industry, overall, seems poised to continue its run of success in
2025. Unlike previous golf booms, we have seen foundational changes to
how the public views its work life balance, how they choose to apportion
their discretionary time and income and equally if not more importantly,
how the golf facility industry has evolved itself to be more mindful of
these realities.
However, we are not without risks and concerns. It strikes us as more
imperative than at any time in the past several decades that the successful
facility operators need to maintain an acute focus on who their customers
are, what they need and how well those desires are being satisfied. The
competitive framework must be viewed broadly; not just relative to other
golf facilities but to alternative forms of entertainment and diversion.
