SEASONAL
EMPLOYMENT
IN GOLF:
LEGAL RISKS AND
BEST PRACTICES
Seasonal employment is crucial to operating
a successful golf course, aligning workforce
needs with the golf season. As such, fixed-term
contracts, even those recurring year over year, are
commonly found at golf clubs. While flexible and
practical, seasonal employment can present legal
complexities, especially when employment terms
are unclear.

In this article, we illustrate how seasonal
employment can become more complicated than one
might expect, particularly where there is an unfortunate
misunderstanding about the specific terms of a
seasonal arrangement. This is the factual context in the
case examined in this article, in which a regrettable
dispute between a golf club (“the Club”) and its Golf
Superintendent (“S”) ended up in court.
