                                  Acknowledgments
This book is dedicated to engineers and executives in the technology, semiconductor, and power electronics and sys- tems design industries who are focused on developing and delivering cleaner, greener, and more efficient power con- version to satisfy the needs of an increasing global agenda toward sustainability.
The benefits of silicon carbide technology have become widely recognized in vehicle electrification, especially as the electric- and hybrid-vehicle market grows. This, in turn, has enabled the technology to mature and drive the commercial- ization of SiC devices into other sectors. Beyond automotive, SiC devices are becoming viable, cost-effective, and efficient replacements for silicon in other high-voltage applications such as electromobility, industrial, and renewable energy.
Our goal with this book is to present a background to SiC technology, an explanation as to how and why its electrical characteristics are suited to power electronics systems in different vertical markets, and its practical implementation in devices. We also look at its market traction at the time of writing this book, plus its potential as a mainstream technol- ogy for the future.
The book couldn’t have come together without the help of keen observers, technology experts, and stakeholders in the power electronics industries. We are indebted to the engi- neers, companies, professors, and industry analysts who generously gave their time to educate us on all things SiC.
More significantly, when asked to contribute, every expert we approached — those whom we regard as the power industry’s brain trust — came back to us with an enthusiastic yes.
Special thanks go to Victor Veliadis, executive director and CTO of PowerAmerica, professor of electrical and computer engineering at North Carolina State University, and distin- guished figure in the SiC world. Veliadis penned the foreword for the book, and we are honored to have his participation and guidance.
For our Market Overview and Technology Analysis, we are fortunate to have input from many of the industry’s lead- ing thinkers. You’ll find reports from Ezgi Dogmus and
Ana Villamor, Yole Développement; Filippo Di Giovanni and Gianfranco Di Marco, STMicroelectronics; Victor Veliadis; Elena Barbarini, System Plus Consulting; Ming Su and Mitch Van Ochten, Rohm Semiconductor; Anup Bhalla, UnitedSiC; Dave Priscak, onsemi; Guy Moxey, Wolfspeed; Stefano Lovati, EEWeb; Peter Friedrichs, Infineon Technologies; and Ryo Takeda, Takamasa Arai, and Mike Hawes, Keysight Technologies.
We are also indebted to the companies that contributed tech papers for the Resources section: UnitedSiC, Analog Devices, Rohm Semiconductor, and Eles.
Of course, the book wouldn’t have been possible without the hard work of the AspenCore Media team and the support of Victor Gustaf Gao, CMO of Arrow Electronics. Victor planted the seed that led to our book series. For the AspenCore Media team, as writers and reporters with a front-row seat to the fast-changing technology industry, we were able to put our collective minds and knowledge together to both create and curate relevant topics and content for the book.
Anne-Françoise Pelé, editor-in-chief of EE Times Europe and AspenCore’s book editor, is the one who makes our ideas materialize into the end product. As project manager, she has enabled the completion and realization of the book through her methodical and strict adherence to process during every step of the way.
Gina Roos, editor-in-chief of Electronic Products, quietly tenacious and knowledgeable about every story that appears on the AspenCore Media network, took on the challenge of curating our collection, pulling together the best stories and art from our extensive archive to move our project from the planning phase to the page.
The team couldn’t have a better partner than Lori O’Toole, chief copy editor, whose response when asked to do the impossible is always “we’ve got this!” Senior copy editor Diana Scheben’s masterful rewrite and copy editing lent a coherent flow to the prose. Talented graphic artist Alan Ducarre conceived the book’s overall design. And Adeline Cannone, graphic design consultant and Lori’s partner in achieving the impossible, spent tireless hours meticulously crafting each layout.
