The Buskaid Music School and Buskaid Soweto String Ensemble owe their existence and prodigious success to British viola player, visionary and force of nature, Rosemary Nalden who founded Buskaid in 1997.
Since its inception, the Buskaid Music School has educated thousands of underprivileged children and young people in the township
of Soweto, South Africa. Exceptional talent, dedication and discipline have led Buskaid students to become music teachers and mentors; to attend prestigious music colleges such as the Royal Academy of Music in the UK; and to join leading orchestras and ensembles throughout South Africa and abroad.
In addition to 26 international tours, the Buskaid String Ensemble has performed in the presence of the late President Nelson Mandela, HRH Prince Charles, Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, former United States First Lady Michelle Obama, and other dignitaries around the world.
I have not had the privilege or good fortune of attending a Buskaid concert in person. However, I have reveled in the brilliance, versatility and energy of its performers via streaming in the U.S. The photographs in this book capture my visceral feelings during four riveting concerts featuring a wide range of composers and musical genres.
Next stop: live in Johannesburg.
