“Next stop, Glens Falls,” the conductor honked over the PA system.
The train screeched to a halt ever so slowly in front of small red brick station house that appeared abandoned except for a U.S. flag flapping disagreeably from a
flimsy pole. A lone woman stood on the platform fidgeting with a stray strand of shoulder-length gray hair. Wrapped in a coat reminiscent of a Canadian blanket, she appeared younger and more attractive than I had imagined. Even though we had never met, she had to be Susan’s mother. The resemblance was unmistakable.
