The grass was very green and very close cropped
like the grass on a golf course tee or at Punchbowl Cemetery where the headstones were all flat. The yard was large, we lived on the corner, but there were no trees, bushes or flowers. The grass went all the way to the foundation of the house. It all looked rather straightlaced and somber, but then it was military housing. It was 1957 Hawaii before the tourists invaded.
Our home was in a flat-topped, cinder block building
that looked exactly like all the other buildings in Radford Terrace. Only the colors were different, but true to military life, not too different. Every other building was military green (we always called it “throw-up” green) or tan.
There were three buildings in our court. Each had four adjoining apartments, but nobody called them that.
