During the sojourn of our life in this planet, we may not often come across outstanding personalities whom we revere. I have met at least one! I met Yogesh bhai in late ’60s i.e., more than 50 years back at Sasmira where he was the Principal of the Technical Institute.
After completing my post- graduation in Textile Engineering from IIT, I joined Sasmira as
a Scientist.
There I met Mr. Y. K. Kusumgar for the first time and was greatly impressed by
his technical
knowledge, ease
of speaking on
any subject,
particularly
on textiles. He
was a very good
orator as well. I was looking forward to having a deeper acquaintance with him.
But, alas, he left Sasmira
to start his own enterprise
on textiles manufacturing.
I wondered why this excellent technologist would manufacture saree, dhoti, etc.
when there were thousands of such set-ups in the country. I felt disappointed that such a talent would devote his time to manufacture stereotype textiles and toil to make
good fortune competing with other mill owners most of whom generally were not academically qualified in textiles.
However, l lost contact with him thereafter as I

Such products were import substitutes and quite difficult to produce conforming to stringent specifications. I also came to know that he mainly dealt with ‘Functional’
and ‘Engineering’ textiles. He took the challenge of producing unconventional products which others preferred not to venture
into. I was happy that his talent was matched in a slot that ensured utilisation of his capabilities.
In the early ’80s
I was posted
to a defence establishment in Mumbai looking after Quality Assurances of textiles meant for our Armed Forces,
along with other disciplines. To my pleasant surprise, I found Kusumgar Corporates was a regular supplier
for various parachute
canopy fabrics like Man carrying parachutes, Brake parachutes, PU coated fabrics for High Altitude clothing ,
joined Defence Science Service (DRDO) and was posted out of Mumbai. But I was always curious about him. Some of my textile acquaintances informed me that Yogesh bhai developed specific textile products like Computer Ribbon,
