DH: What is the relationship between your music and the environments in which you play?
DP: I’ve played above the Arctic Circle in Norway; in
Japan at a chamber music festival; in Portland, Oregon; in New England . . . Anyway, it’s always inspiring to see nature around you. It reminds you how the music fits into the grand scheme of the universe. Having said that, I’m not sure if I see a beautiful mountain, I’ll play a phrase differently just because I see the mountain. But definitely, playing great music in awesome spaces with nature around does make it seem like we’re participating in nature itself, when we create great music in those environments.
THO: What you said is so beautiful, I feel the same way. I’m very inspired by what’s around me. When you look at
nature, you can’t help but be inspired by the landscape and the beauty and serenity of it. I think that music is inherent in nature and that they go really well together. I think that everything has a pulse and a hum and a beat and a rhythm and a tune, everywhere. And to have it in its most natural element is very profound.
DP: This is one of the great perks of being a musician—we get the opportunity to go to a place like this. It’s fun for us to do all these things, and in addition, play music that we love to play anyway.
THO: With people that we love. What other job gives you that opportunity?
