HONEY DRESSINGS
Medical Grade Honey dressings are becoming increasingly popular for the proven antimicrobial capabilities that have been known for thousands of years. They are a natural alternative to other antimicrobial products, and are available in a multitude of preparations.
The inherent acidity of honey increases the release of oxygen from haemoglobin, making the wound environment less favourable to destructive proteases. The high osmolarity of honey draws uid out of the wound bed to create an out ow of lymph as occurs with negative pressure therapy.
There is good evidence showing that Manuka Honey stimulates the immune response, suppresses in ammation, and brings about rapid autolytic debridement. The consensus document from the International Wound Infection Institute gives guidance that product selection should be guided by the honey being from Leptospermum (Manuka) species, and that the product should have been subjected to gamma irradiation.
The Medihoney range ticks these criteria; is available in the following formations:
• Viscous gel (negating the issue of traditional honey gels running o the wound)
• Honey impregnated calcium alginate for exudate absorption
• 3-ply tulle dressing
• Absorbent hydrogel allowing the wound to be viewed through the dressing
WHEN TO USE HONEY DRESSINGS?
Honey dressings have been used for thousands of years to treat wounds. Modern practice often sees Honey Dressings used to tackle infected wounds speci cally. Recommendations taken from the consensus document released by the International Wound Infection Institute in November 2016 endorse the ‘two-week challenge’.
In practice, this means using a particular dressing for a fortnight before reviewing where, as a clinician, you would expect the wound to be in the healing process. If the wound isn’t progressing as hoped, the suggestion is that you try something di erent. This may be moving from a silver dressing to a honey dressing for example.
