How does your garden grow? My garden grows just enough to attract ground squirrels and rabbits which seem to appear the day before I get to the lettuce.
Mark Clennon is a New York-based photographer with a partic- ular focus on editorial, commercial, and documentary projects. Adeptly jumping between these forms of photography, which he’s been practicing since leaving his tech job in 2017, Mark’s goal
is to capture the Black experience in its totality. His images are therefore nuanced and multifaceted, capturing joy, pain, triumph, and everything in between. Mark photographed This Used to be a Garden? on page 222.
How does your garden grow? My garden grows because of the friends and family that pour into me; from there, I’m responsible for bringing my own sunshine.
Danielle DeGrasse-Alston is a director / screenwriter from Chicago, now working in Los Angeles. Her career as a director started with music videos and branded content pieces for brands
like Nike. For a period of time, she interned at Leo Burnett as a
Jr. Art Director. After moving to LA, she resumed her career as a freelance director and co-founded a production company called Verluxe. In addition to directing music videos / branded commer- cials, she is a freelance creative consultant for Capitol Records. She is currently writing a biopic TV series. How does your garden grow? My garden needs sun from the universe, and respect from the community.
Jen Stark was born in Miami, Florida in 1983, and studied at
the Maryland Institute College of Art, graduating in 2005. Her artwork is driven by an interest in conceptualizing visual systems to simulate plant growth, evolution, infinity, fractals and sacred geometries. She currently lives and works in Los Angeles, CA. Jen created this issue’s art cover and features on page 170.
How does your garden grow? My garden grows because of my passion for life and art, laughter with friends, delicious food, and doing things that I enjoy.
