Anxiety and depression are no strangers to 2020, with the majority of the world living
in pandemic isolation, amidst an econom-
ic collapse and continually worsening news headlines. And though we’re immersed in stimulating modern technology, a centuries-old artform of ceramics, or throwing pottery, might be today’s brain candy, an antidote to a mental health downturn.
Physicians, therapists, and psychologists are fascinated with the brain’s functioning while practicing the spinning art wheel—mindfulness meditation—allowing us to put less focus on ourselves and more on the anatomy of pottery.
We found three Southern California ceramicists who have mastered the ancient art of transforming a lump of cold, hard clay into a Zen-like dream, and remarks on their process in this unprecedented moment in time are found on the following pages. Just looking at these beautiful pieces relaxes the mind and calms... Can you say Ohmmmmmmm?
