Poet: Ru’aa Awad
You take the beautiful melanin in my skin for yourself
just as you’ve taken everything that once belonged to me
and use it to fuel your ignorance and hate.
You take my exquisite dark irises
that resemble the chocolate which you love so
and call them boring in comparison to your sky blues and emerald greens. You take my tight curls and luscious thick hair
and curse them and their beauty
while you praise thin hair that falls straight.
You say we are one and the same,
yet for some reason,
You always get more, you always get praise, and you always get love
while I only get blood, I only get cruelty, and I only get hate.
