Walk the Stage Emma Zvonik Walks the stage- shakes the hand, Sits back down and tosses her cap. That piece of paper worth more Than what it is made of, Now is in her grasp. Hear the shouts--the cries--the joy. See the sea of burnt orange and deep blue, And their faces filled with pride. But that was then. Now. See their faces filled with horror, In the sea of earthy green and burgundy red. Hear the shots--the cries--the pain. Now in her grasp she holds The tags she was given, When she signed away her freedom Just one month before. One top of her rifle she lays her cap, And Death grabs her by the hand. He leads her up the stairs, straight to her end. 59
