To Name or Not to Name?
Mentioning your writing collaborator is a matter of choice that should be entirely within your discretion. Unquestionably, you are named as “author.” You do not have to name your collaborator if you do not so choose. If, on the other hand, you wish to mention your ghostwriter, you may elect to do so in one of two ways: either you can offer your ghostwriter a co-authorship or, more typically, you can designate your name on the cover with the ghostwriter’s name (e.g., John/Jane Doe with John/Jane Smith).
Publication and Marketing
Usually, publication and marketing are not within the purview of writing collaboration services. Nonetheless, most often, your ghostwriter should be able to direct you to appropriate publishing companies, literary agents, and/or public relations specialists. Keep in mind that publication and marketing are, typically, entirely separate and apart from the ghostwriting process, and require additional fees. Accessing reputable publication and marketing service providers involves many of the elements involved in hiring a ghostwriter – particularly the quest for cohesiveness, mutual rapport and trust.
The Importance of Breathing
When they first began the process of hiring a ghostwriter, virtually all of my clients viewed the experience as somewhat mystical, vague, and even frightening. They were entrusting their lives and/or ideas to a veritable stranger. Trepidation inundated their minds and hearts: Will my book actually be written? Will it go to press, will it be well-received? Can I really do this?
