Traffic Signals
Problem
The Davis Square and Elm-Cut- ter ter intersections are a a a visual salad of yellow black and gal- vanized steel signal poles It is apparent that the older utili- tarian yellow poles are out of place in the Square The City has begun to replace these with new less obtrusive black poles that are intended to blend with the black street light poles that have been installed throughout the square The remaining yel- low poles still outnumber the black ones and contribute to the visual mishmash at each in- tersection Solution
1 1 Replace all 15 yellow poles and signal fixtures with black poles and LED signal fixtures such that all of the vertical poles at each intersection are the same family of elements 2 The light fixtures attached to each galvanized pole arm should be similarly replaced with black housings and LED lights If all of the signal and light poles are converted to black Davis Square will appear more unified and cohesive The yellow sig- nal poles are a a a a a small part of the overall visual experience of the Square but they are are a a a contrib- uting factor to to the perception that Davis Square is is in in decline and not well caredfor Color

The 15 remaining yellow poles at these two intersections are visibly aged faded and marred The signal fixtures they support are similarly deteriorated and the illumination technology is out of date The galvanized steel poles and cantilever arms extend signal lights out over traffic lanes Their aged yellow fixtures are also in need of replacement 34
