Laser Motive first proved
themselves back in 2009 by winning the NASA Centennial Challenge for transmitting power over a beam of light, i.e., Power Beaming. The company specializes in delivering electric power via laser. Not only can this be done over multimode fiber but they have also developed a unique means of remotely powering UAVs via laser in free space. !
The new tethered system can be used to power any multi-rotor helicopter (Quad-copter) indefinitely, at a defined altitude using laser power over fiber optic cable. Their first public demonstration of this flight method of an aircraft powered by the new system was shown at the SPIE Defense, Security & Sensing (DS&S) trade show at the Baltimore Convention Center back in 2013. LaserMotives technical name for this method of flight is “InvisiTower”!
The system is compact and portable (small enough to fit in the back of an SUV) and does not require a pilot to fly — just someone to monitor the video coming from it.!
The system is ideal in that it allows unlimited flight even in relatively smaller confined spaces and is enhanced by the use of optical fiber which is a lot thinner than the equivalent power- carrying capacity of a copper- based system. Because optical fiber is nonconductive and is immune to any EMI radiation, operation in lightening-probed environments or where high voltage wires might be a problem,
the more pronounced safety concerns are eliminated. There are several applications where InvisiTower would be useful, both in the military and civilian markets; these include, but are not limited to: !
*ISR and situational awareness ! *Communications relay !
*News & sports reporting!
*First responders eye-in- the-sky ! *Industrial facility security.!
