RACE DAY
So how do you deal with the nerves? You can’t help but admire the young racers, having the confidence to stand in the start gate and ski through a technical, steep course reaching speeds of 70kph. Many of them have never skied a Giant Slalom course before and for others, racing on actual snow was a first.
Races were held over three days with the Under 10s and Under 12s kicking off events. Being younger and smaller certainly didn’t slow them down with both Wilf Jones and Charlie Wilberforce-Marsh showing great talent and adding to their medal collection. It’s a fearsome competition when you move up to the older categories. A minor mistake can add a split second onto your time making all the difference between reaching podium or not. All NWSC racers did themselves proud with medals coming thick and fast. Matt Ingle; coach, ski racer (and general skiing legend) showed the youngsters how to do it winning both the masters slalom and giant slalom races.
Have you ever stopped to think why do you pay so much money and spend so much time running around for your child to ski? Skiing is more than the thrill of sliding down snow. It’s about all the opportunities they have to make life-long friends, for them to accomplish goals, to feel like quitting but not giving up, to learn to deal with disappointment, to learn to deal with nerves, to celebrate success, to learn to work with others and be kind and supportive to each other.
This was a week of lovely moments of friendships and bonding, and it was about the kids having the motivation to ski all day and then the discipline needed to study in the evenings. It is wonderful to see the huge smiles from
those who successfully skied the race course or down a steep black run or jumping further and higher than before!
