PATHWAY TO LEISURE Conwy’s leisure development team have been working with social services to develop engagement days for young people completing education and looking for work in the leisure industry. We offer a variety of sessions including water sports, cycling and climbing with coach
education training at the end of the course, for those excelling in a certain discipline.
CYCLE TRAINING FOR PRIMARY SCHOOLS
The cycle training team have been delivering the ‘Bikeability’ accreditation to all primary schools in Conwy. Over 600 year 5 and 6 pupils have undergone the training. Trainees have been learning the Highway Code, riding positions on the road and general bike checks and safety.
ELECTRIC BIKES
The leisure team have been continuing with the Friday e-bike sessions over the winter period. Participants have been riding various routes within Llanrwst and the wider areas and have developed both their riding knowledge and bike skills at the same time.
Ian, 74 from Llanrwst:
“i love e-biking and i participate in the sessions every week. i get a feel good buzz from the e-bikes and have met some great people along the way. Thanks ffit conwy!”
BALANCE BIKE TRAINING
Whilst funding is available the team are able to offer balance bike training to some schools. The training is a great offer to
schools to help develop physical literacy and confidence for young children under 5 years of age.
ALN GROUPS
The team have been engaging with various additional learning needs groups. In particular Canolfan Addysg Conwy. Within the sessions the group have learnt how to clean and maintain bikes. In addition the group learnt map reading using the local Gwydir trails in Llanrwst and mountain biking specific skills.
Dane, 15 from Colwyn Bay:
i have attended every session and really enjoy riding the e-bikes the most. i have done a video edit using the schools go pro to track our rides. i think the best parts of the session is going fast downhill and cleaning the bikes at the end.
SCHOOL SPORTS
The team have been delivering a number of school sport sessions with the aim of developing a better network of extracurricular sports in partnership with local clubs.
This includes a number of schools receiving 6 weeks of sport and afterschool sport including gymnastics, football, multisport and more!
