No stranger to Worthing audiences, her passion for bringing joy
to people through music, combined with her enthusiasm and talent,
have justifiably earned Jess a warm welcome at every concert. As well as being a world renowned performer, Jess presents her own radio programme for Radio 3.
Barbara Thompson, who passed away in 2022, was a talented saxophonist and composer, who was heavily influenced by the music of such jazz greats as Duke Ellington and John Coltrane. Many will know of her through the title music of the television series A Touch of Frost.
Two wonderfully evocative and inspiring pieces of music start each half of this concert, both being creations of John Williams – one of Hollywood’s best-known and revered composers. The first is the iconic suite from the Star Wars series of films, invoking (as it does) the elements of war and peace in all their horror and glory. The second also has space travel at its heart, as it reflects upon the adventures of an extra-terrestrial (E.T.) here on earth.
The concert concludes with Malcolm Arnold’s Symphony No. 6, which was composed during his time in St. Merryn, Cornwall. An exciting symphony that includes allusions to jazz saxophonist Charlie Parker, an elegiac slow movement and a finale with hints of Shostakovich’s Festival Overture.
