Questions to the transporter.
You need to ask as many questions as possible to the agent so you will know details about the company, what services they offer and how they price their services. Some of the most important questions to ask are:
1. Do they specialize in transporting classic, collectible, antique or vintage cars?
If they do, then you can usually rest assured that they know the ins and outs of handling a car that needs special attention and care during shipment.
2. Does the company have a DOT and MC number?
All legitimate carriers are required to be registered with the USDOT and have a DOT and a Motor Carrier (MC) number. If the company cannot provide a number, they are most likely a broker and not a carrier. Brokers can save you time as well as money as they usually have connections with thousands of carriers worldwide. Many car owners prefer brokers as they can save time by having a broker look for a carrier
instead of spending hours searching on their own. Others prefer calling carriers on their own because they can have personal attention and may even be able to access discounts not offered through a broker.
3. Does the company pick cars up or deliver them with door to door transport or do they use shipping terminals?
Door to door transport is very convenient because you can meet the driver at your personal or business address. If your street is narrow or a large truck cannot safely travel on it, the driver will arrange to meet you at a local business with a large parking lot as close to your physical address as possible or at a nearby interstate on or off ramp to pick the car up or deliver it. Shipping terminals are also widely used by auto transport companies and using them can often save money on your services.
