 TELL THE STORY
MAN MATH
BALANCING THE EQUATION BETWEEN MAN AND WOMAN
EDITOR IN-CHIEF STAN THORNE
Ilike to listen to several podcasts while driving; The Smoking Tire and Spike’s Car Radio, to name a few. I typically learn about the latest cars, or what is going on in the industry, or who has the latest greatest horsepower gain.
This last week, a line of thinking was laid out before that nearly caused me to drive into the ditch. I swerved while grasping the gravity and simplistic clarity to which the equation every man can understand, but a woman shall not begin to fathom, “Man Math”.
It is far more than a balanced equation. It is more than the sum of all parts. It is the synthesis of item enjoyment split, reevaluated, paired with another item of greater or equal emotional value but not financial value, yet the balance needs to remain close. It is man math.
I’ll give an example. The podcaster’s wife had recently traveled out of the country for an extended amount of time. While
he loved his early ‘80s 911, it was getting long in the tooth and he wanted better air conditioning. He sold it for a fun date night Boxster, thinking his wife would like it.
With the remaining cash he treated himself to a Rolex watch that he had always wanted.
When his wife returned from her travels, she stopped in the garage asking “what is that?”. He explained he bought a date night car with better AC for “her” and the watch he’d had his eye on for sometime.
The wife was livid. She quickly listed the things the house needed, windows, carpet, furniture, etc. “But the math doesn’t add up”, he tried to explain to his wife.
The podcasters were laughing, agreeing with him that windows and carpet don’t equal the driving experience of owning a Porsche. The wife now refuses to ride in the Boxster for the principle of it.
