it) and the group quickly moved to their cars like the LeMans starts of old and all of the nice, straight lines of parked Porsches morphed into a cat-herd of anxious drivers all wanting to get out in the front of a very large pack. Once out
of the suburbia, the road finally turned into Highway 5 and the really enjoyable part of the trip. Despite being relegated to ‘back road’ status when Interstate 435 was completed, this state highway still offers a great mix of banked turns, sweepers and great rural scenery. Did I mention it was a perfect sunny day?
The pack wound north up through Leavenworth, Kansas and then crossed the bridge over the Missouri River into Missouri. The road up to Weston was also a great two-lane route, and our Porsche procession finally reached the destination. Many area businesses have been hard-hit with the state ordered lockdowns and other COVID precautions, but the folks with Riverwood Winery made
every effort to accommodate
our group, social distancing notwithstanding. They offered up a small outdoor bistro of both food and wine selection, and our “masked ball” of sorts was held outdoors at a very cozy open-air collection of tables, pergolas and assorted umbrellas to hold off the sun.
After a leisurely lunch and socializing – yes...at the proper distances – our group slowly disbanded; each choosing their own way home to enjoy the rest
of a beautiful afternoon. It was
an outstanding first drive of the season – kudos and congrats to our Drive-Master and apprentice pole- dancer Mike Rehak!!!
