 vehicles.
So I have harnesses, but what do I buy and how much is it going to cost? HANS devices have become much cheaper in the last few years with mul- tiple companies getting into the market, which is a good thing for the consum- er. HANS Device was the original, and likely what you will see the most of out there. Simpson racing makes a hybrid system which wraps around your body rather than just sitting on your shoulders. Zamp and Necksgen are additional com- panies making devices.
We have used them all in our racing group. We have found that the guys with bigger necks don’t like the over the shoulders devices as they pinch their necks, and they have better luck with the hybrid systems that wrap around their body. The thinner necks tend to like the over the shoulder devices. All these de- vices can range from $400 to well over a thousand for a professional carbon fi- ber lightweight system. The $400 units work just fine for the occasional HPDE participant. In a long endurance race of 2 hours, sure the lightweight carbon units are nice, but still not necessary, it just comes down to preference. And of course, there are different sizes, so make sure you take the proper measurements when ordering your device. While HPDE events are extremely safe, it is the goal of the club to make sure everyone is using their safety devices to their full extent by utilizing all the components together properly.
