the Boxster/Cayman’s are overheating power steering pumps. There are a couple solutions for this including electric power steering, but we chose the cheaper route and went with a smaller crankshaft pulley which allows the pump to turn slower, which should help prevent overheating. For now we are keeping the A/C system intact since it will be a dual purpose street/track car.
Here you can see the size difference between the stock and underdrive pulley
And of course on ANY M96/M97, the rst thing you should do is replace the waterpump. This should be a 3 year maintenance item, even on a street car. If the ns break off the impeller, they will clog themselves in the coolant passages to the cylinder heads and you WILL eventually crack a head and cause intermix of coolant and oil in the engine. Don’t worry, that is a cheap x at about $10k. Preventative maintenance is key here! Replace your pumps!
And of course, for the track we add the 3rd radiator up front for a little extra cooling, along with a low temp thermostat. The 987/997 system is SO much easier to add the 3rd radiator as the quick connect ports are on the side radiators already. A couple quick connections and you are done.
And well.....you have to get rid of that stock heavy muf er, so we chose to go with a Fabspeed Max o exhaust so we can hear this car sing and wide open throttle. In the picture you will also notice red rear tie down points for trailering the car to the track.
When on the track under hard cornering, a weak link is keeping the oil around the pickup tube in the oil pan. We added a 2qt deep sump plate with improved baf e system to help prevent oil starvation. This is a bit of a bandaid x to a larger issue, but should be an improvement until we start running much stickier tires.
