ROUND THE HOUSES
One of my favourite moments in the whole year is hearing the pupils sing their hearts out during the finale of the House Music competition.
As a symbol of camaraderie and kinship, there is none finer, except perhaps
at the Cross-Country competition
or on Sports Day where the strains
of perspiration during the tug of war indicate just how much the House means to each and every pupil.
The house system is firmly embedded in the psyche and calendar of the school. Based around four of the very original houses, or ‘Sets’ as they were known (whose names originated from four of the early twentieth century teachers under the headship of E. L. Browne), pupils from Reception to
Year 8 are assigned to a House and contribute to competitions and events
that feature throughout the year. Efforts that the children make either individually or as part of a team in all areas of school life may receive points as part of the Set Cup Competition.
The Set Cup is awarded at the end of each term to the House that has scored the most points that term. The Newton Sheffield Set Cup is awarded to the House that has accumulated the most points across the three terms. Additionally, the Henry Tankard is awarded to the winning House leader.
This year the competition was curtailed early and could not take place during the summer term which meant we did not have an overall winner for
the year. However, an exciting contest during the autumn term saw VCs claim the crown from Sea Kings in second place only for the positions to be reversed in the spring term, meaning that Sea Kings won the Set Cup for the first time since 2015.
Thank you to the House leaders for inspiring the children in all that they do: Mr Barter – Arcos
Mrs Garbett – Rovers
Miss Lancefield – Sea Kings
Mrs Veitch - VCs
I am already looking forward to the contest of 2020-21.
