THE TERM “HOSPICE” CAN BE TRACED BACK TO MEDIEVAL TIMES WHEN IT REFERRED TO A PLACE OF SHELTER AND REST FOR WEARY OR ILL TRAVELERS ON A LONG JOURNEY.
“HOSPICE” WAS FIRST APPLIED TO DYING PATIENTS BY DAME CICELY SAUNDERS WHO FOUNDED THE FIRST MODERN HOSPICE—ST. CHRISTOPHER’S HOSPICE—IN LONDON.
THE FIRST MODERN HOSPICE IN THE US WAS FOUNDED IN SOUTHEASTERN CONNECTICUT BY FLORENCE WALD, ALONG WITH TWO PEDIATRICIANS AND A CHAPLAIN.
