REACTION THRUSTERS
The Apollo mother ship used reaction thrusters installed on the SM to remove the LEM from the S-IVB stage. Each thruster generated 94 pounds of force.
DOCKING AND EXTRACTING
The trip to the moon using LOR mode included some critical phases. One of them was the extraction of the Lunar Excursion Module (LEM) when the last section of the Saturn V rocket, the S-IVB stage, turned off after giving the final push to the Apollo spacecrafts toward the moon. Then, the Command/Service Module was separated from the S-IVB stage, turned around 180°, came back to dock with the LEM, and was extracted from the launch vehicle. If the docking maneuver failed, the entire mission would fail too.
 SLA ADAPTER
The outer shell that housed the LEM was
the Spacecraft Lunar Module Adapter (SLA). Originally, their top four panels remained attached to the S-IVB stage as they opened
a 45° angle, but engineers redesigned them to be jettisoned and avoid the risk of collision with the CSM spacecraft.
