OUR PROUD HISTORY
Though the world may be unpredictable, one thing remains certain – the Y. The Tampa Metropolitan Area YMCA is, and always will be, dedicated to building healthy, confident, connected and secure children, adults, families and communities.
In Tampa, the first YMCA opened in 1889 in rented quarters on Zack Street. By 1908,
a 50,000-square foot Zack Street YMCA opened, housing Tampa’s first gymnasium and indoor swimming pool.
Over the decades, that first location has grown to eleven family facilities, two express Ys, an outdoor adventure camp in Riverview,
a youth and family center with a water park, 29 afterschool programs, a Y Without Walls in the heart of Sulphur Springs and several First Tee - Tampa Bay golf sites across Hillsborough and East Pasco counties.
These assets allow us to reach more than 265,000 individuals each year through membership, programs, and outreach activities in our community. As we continue to expand our reach into new communities, we build the foundation to take the Tampa YMCA into the future so we can continue to serve Tampa Bay for years to come.
Today the YMCA is the largest and oldest service organization in America. We are present in over 10,000 communities throughout the country and collectively we serve over 21 million individuals.
