Cleft Bottle Fund
March 2014 For babies born with cleft lip and palate, nursing from a bottle can be a challenge. Their cleft prevents them from being able to form a seal around the bottle’s nipple and as a result they cannot suck productively. To counter this problem, caregivers often cut the top of the nipple, which allows the formula to flow freely. However, because the flow is no longer controlled, it is not unusual for most of the bottle’s contents to end up down the front of the babies and not into their tummies! A specially designed “cleft bottle” solves this problem. Made of soft plastic, the caregiver gently and slowly squeezes out the formula for the baby. All the baby needs to do is swallow.
