Honda and Red Bull Racing power-up
Honda and Red Bull Group have signed an agreement whereby Honda will enter into a partnership with Red Bull Racing to supply it with power units for two years from the start of the 2019 FIA Formula
One World Championship.
This will be in addition to its current agreement with Red Bull Scuderia Toro Rosso. The two Red Bull-owned teams will run identical specification Honda power units.
“Having established a good relationship with Scuderia Toro Rosso, we have decided to extend our Formula One involvement to the other team in the Red Bull family, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing, as from the 2019 season,” Takahiro Hachigo, President and Representative Director of Honda said.
“Having two teams means we can access twice as much data as previously. We believe that working with both Toro Rosso and Red Bull Racing will allow us to get closer to our goal of winning races and championships, building two strong partnerships. Discussions proceeded very quickly, thanks to Red Bull’s open and respectful attitude towards Honda, leading to a deal that is fair and equitable for all parties.”
“We have always taken decisions such as this dispassionately and with only one criteria in mind – do we believe the outcome will allow us to compete at a higher level,” Christian Horner, Aston Martin Red Bull Racing Team Principal said.
BMW is grounded
BMW is the first car company
to offer wireless charging for an electric vehicle with GroundPad.
A 530e iPerformance can be powered up
through this inductive charging station that
connects to its car equivalent CarPad and
transfers energy over a distance of about eight
centimetres using a magnetic field. This creates an electric current in the CarPad that charges the battery.
It has 3.2Kw of charging power with an efficiency rating of 85 percent, which takes around three and a half hours to fully charge the 530e. Charging will begin once the car has been turned off and it will stop once the battery is at 100%.
The GroundPad is designed for outdoors use as well as in a garage, and it is foolproof as you can run over it though it does have a system to display its position on the onboard display.
So far it is only available in Germany, but will be available in the UK, US, Japan and China but no timeline for Australia yet.

GM and Honda together again over
battery power
General Motors and Honda have announced an agreement for new
advanced chemistry battery components, including the cell and
module, to accelerate both companies’ plans for all-electric vehicles.
The next-gen battery will deliver higher energy density, smaller packaging and faster charging capabilities for both companies’ future products, mainly for the North American market.
Under the agreement, the companies will collaborate based on GM’s next generation battery system with the intent for Honda to source the battery modules from GM.
The collaboration will support each company’s respective and distinct vehicles. The combined scale and global manufacturing efficiencies will ultimately provide greater value to customers.
GM and Honda already have a proven relationship around electrification, having formed the industry’s first manufacturing joint venture to produce an advanced hydrogen fuel cell system in the 2020 timeframe. The integrated development teams are working to deliver a more affordable commercial solution for fuel cell and hydrogen storage systems.
