Lesson Plan
1. Warm-up: ‘Shake Your Sillies Out’ performed by The Wiggles See spring lesson one.
* Running time approx. 2 mins.
2. Stretching and curling: Elephants Spraying Water See spring lesson one.
* Running time approx. 3 mins.
3. Travel to Danceland: ‘Bibbidi-Bobbidi-Boo’ performed by Verna Felton
“Today we are going to skip to Danceland like fairies.” Make sure the children are seated. Demonstrate how to step hop, as in previous weeks, then gradually speed it up so that you are skipping. Ask the children to stand and practise the movements with you. Play the music and the children follow you as you all skip to Danceland. Encourage the children to skip in the same direction.
* Running time approx. 4 mins.
4. Introduce the theme: ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ written by Anne Porter Without speaking, get the children into a circle by singing ‘Let’s Make a Circle’ as in spring lesson one.
“Today we are going to learn about traditional tales.” Give a few examples of characters from traditional tales and see if any volunteers can name others. Play a quick action game using the words and actions listed below. N.B. these actions will be revisited later in the lesson during the choreographed dance.
Prince and Princess = put tips of fingers together on top of your head to make a crown as you make the sound of a trumpet fanfare
Jack and the Beanstalk = crouch down on the floor and gradually stand and stretch arms up high whilst on tippy toes as though you are the growing beanstalk as you sing “I’m a growing beanstalk”
Gingerbread Man = run on the spot as you say “run, run as fast as you can, you can’t catch me I’m the gingerbread man!”
Big Bad Wolf = hands to side of mouth and howl like a wolf
Fairy Godmother = wave magic wand as you sing “bibbidi-bobbidi-boo”
a) “Every time I say ‘Big Bad Wolf’ you have to put your hands to the side of your mouth and howl like a wolf”. Perform the action to demonstrate. Then you say, “Big Bad Wolf”, and the children put their hands to the side of their mouths and howl like a wolf. Practice several times.
b) One by one, add in the rest of the characters listed above. Make sure to mix up the order in which you are saying them as you teach the game.
c) At first, do all the actions and sounds with the children.
