4. Introduce the theme
“Let’s take a look in the sparkly magic bag and see what clue there is for today’s story.” Take out the picture of a fruit salad. Ask the children the following questions.
a) “What is in this picture? Which fruits can you see in the picture?”
b) “We eat fruit to help us feel healthy, happy and strong. Let’s all eat some fruit salad now!” Everyone mimes eating fruit salad. Rub tummy and say
“mmm, delicious!”
c) “To be healthy we also need to keep nice and clean.” Everyone acts out
washing themselves in the bath.
d) “Exercise also helps us to be healthy, big and strong. There are lots of kinds
of exercise like swimming, running, bike riding and playing football. Put your hand up if you would like to tell everyone your favourite type of exercise.” Choose a volunteer to answer. You act out performing the suggested activity (using upper body) and the children copy you. Repeat using ideas from three more volunteers.
* Running time approx. 2 mins 30 secs.
5. Action song or poem: ‘Chop, Chop’ (traditional)
a) “We’re going to make a healthy vegetable soup. First we need a giant bowl.” Mime taking out a giant bowl and the children should naturally copy you.
Ask a volunteer to suggest a vegetable to include.
b) “Now we need to chop up our vegetable!” Make your left hand the chopping
board (flat palm facing up). Mime placing the suggested vegetable on top of the chopping board. On the first, second and fourth lines of the rhyme, use your right hand to chop the vegetable to the pulse. On the third line (“What we have left...”), brush the chopped-up vegetable into the bowl to the pulse. During the final section (“Stir it round”), make a stirring action
