Please see instructions in lesson plan 1.
2. Welcome (5 mins): ‘Hello, Hello’ written by Janice Buckner Please see instructions in lesson plan 1.
‘Hello Everyone’
You sing “hello everyone”.
The children respond, “hello Your Name Sparkles”.
Invite a volunteer to be the ‘leader’. They sing “hello everyone” to the group and the group responds by singing hello back to them. E.g. “hello Milly/Luke/Joshua”. Make sure you copy the volunteer’s pitch when you respond. Repeat with two or three more volunteers.
3. Getting to Know Your Ukulele (4 mins)
Choose a volunteer to show you where the head, neck, body and sound hole are on their ukulele. Next, point to each of the known body parts on your own ukulele, one by one, and ask the group to name them.
Show the children a fret and ask everyone to repeat the word “fret” (e.g. “let’s all say it together. 1, 2, 3 fret. 1, 2, 3 fret. 1, 2, 3 fret”). Then all count out loud together how many frets are on your ukuleles (12). “This part of the ukulele where all of the frets live is called a fretboard. Let’s all say that together. 1, 2, 3 fretboard. 1, 2, 3 fretboard. 1, 2, 3 fretboard.”
Point to each of the known body parts (including a fret and the fretboard) on your own ukulele, one by one, and ask the group to name them. Repeat, mixing up the order. Next point to a fret and ask a volunteer to name it. Then point to the fretboard and ask a volunteer to name it.
“Part of this week’s homework is to learn the name of the frets and the fretboard for next week.”
