If you notice that any of the children have picked up on this rather well, you can ask them to perform solo.
“Singing ‘See Saw Up and Down’ and plucking the rhythm on the G and E strings is part of your homework this week.”
8. Song/Game (5 mins): ‘Walkin’ in the Rain’ (traditional)
Click activity name to open YouTube video link.
Hum the song to see if any of the children recognise it. The children stand up and sing the song (whilst performing the actions) several times. See video. Remind the children to try their best to walk in time with the pulse (except for the jumping part!).
Walkin' in the rain, walkin' in the rain, (walk in time with the pulse)
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash! (stop on ‘jump’ and jump on ‘splash’) Walkin' in the rain, walkin' in the rain, (walk in time with the pulse)
Look there's a puddle let's jump. Splash! (stop on ‘jump’ and jump on ‘splash’)
Ask a volunteer to name an animal or creature that is very quiet (e.g. mouse, fairy). Then tell the children to perform the song quietly, moving like the suggested animal/creature.
Ask a volunteer to name an animal or creature that is very loud (e.g. elephant, giant). Then tell the children to perform the song loudly, moving like the suggested animal/creature.
NB: when demonstrating quieter and louder dynamics, make sure not to adjust the tempo of your singing. Sometimes teachers tend to sing slowly and quietly at the same time (for example) and so their students start to think that slow and quiet have the same meaning.
Next, the children perform the song in their thinking voices, except for the “splash” which they say out loud. If the children do this correctly, then everyone should say “splash” at the same time. You can start by silently mouthing the words to make this easier but eventually the children should be able to do this without mouthing the words.
9. Strumming the Ukulele (7 mins): ‘Pease Pudding Hot’, ‘Bell Horses’ & ‘See Saw Up and Down’ (traditional)
Please see instructions in lesson plan 8.
10. Let of Steam! (5 mins): ‘Banana Splits’ written by Ana Sanderson
Everyone says the chant and performs the actions as suggested by the words. Repeat. Click here to see the video.
Bananas, bananas, clap, clap, clap, Bananas, bananas, flap, flap, flap, Bananas, bananas, click, click, click, Bananas, bananas, flick, flick, flick, Bananas, bananas, bump, bump, bump, Bananas, bananas, jump, jump, jump!
Say the action words in your thinking voices (so leave out the action words and chant “bananas, bananas” followed by the action only). Click here to see the video.
Then see if the group can perform the whole chant out loud but backwards. E.g.
